In the 5th aliyah of Parshas Shemini, we learn about Elazar and Isamar's decision to burn the chatas (sin offering), rather than eat it. This seems to be a similar mistake to Nadav and Avihu--also ruling a halacha in the presence of Moshe. However, there is a tricky balance between the two that needs to be maintained. On the one hand, a person needs to understand his position and act with essential deference; at the same time, a talmid (student) should defend his position and can argue with his Rebbi, understanding that his Rebbi has the final say.
