A Kohen can only become tameh (ritually impure) for a dead person when it is a close family member, while a Kohen Gadol can only become tameh for a meis mitzvah. This is not merely permission for the Kohen to do so because of his grief, rather it is incumbent upon him to take care of his closest family members at the time of their death. Every person has a primary, important responsibility to care for his own family members, and is also supposed to reach out of his immediate circle and provide care and protection to others in need of a home. Even the Kohen, who has the important job of bringing Bnei Yisroel closer to Hashem, is instructed regarding this primary responsibility. |
